Overview
Areas of treatment at OrthoCoast
Your back limits how far you can walk, a joint disturbs your sleep or an abnormal bone density result raises questions. Perhaps more than one of these situations applies to you. It is then not always easy to decide which investigation or treatment would be useful first.

Do not wait for an appointment if acute warning signs appear
New or worsening paralysis or weakness, numbness in the saddle area, or new bladder or bowel dysfunction together with back symptoms require immediate medical assessment. In an emergency, call 112 and do not wait for a digital reply. This also applies to severe chest pain or severe breathlessness.
Fever or other signs of infection together with back symptoms, or a joint that suddenly becomes very painful, hot or swollen, should be assessed by a doctor the same day. If practices are closed and treatment cannot wait, 116117 can help with non-life-threatening symptoms. Please arrange other urgent orthopaedic concerns with the practice; our urgent clinic requires an appointment to be agreed beforehand.
Understanding
A closer look
At OrthoCoast in Wolgast, we begin with your concern and consider the medical steps that relate to it. This overview helps you find the right area of care. You do not need to know a definite diagnosis or have already chosen a treatment.
Back care and orthopaedic pain management
If back problems repeatedly limit what you can do, you want to understand what explains the symptoms and how to make daily life more predictable again. In our back pain treatment, we bring together your account, the physical examination and existing findings. Together, we discuss the possible role of adapted exercise, manual medicine or targeted pain treatment, for example. Not every episode of back pain needs an injection.
The accompanying page on orthopaedic pain management is also for people with longer-standing pain in joints, muscles and tendons. It considers previous treatments, achievable goals and how we assess progress together. Our service concerns musculoskeletal pain. We do not prescribe opioids or medical cannabis.
Further information
Bone health and osteology
Increased fracture risk does not fit into a single body region. At our DVO specialist outpatient centre for osteology, we therefore look at bone health as a whole. Previous fractures, conditions, medicines and steadiness when walking can be just as important as bone density.
If relevant risks are present, we recommend specialist bone assessment before a first fracture occurs. Our aim is to identify increased fracture risk early and, where possible, prevent even the first fracture. With established osteoporosis, the focus may be on choosing or continuing treatment and fitting it into daily life. The focus page explains how a bone density scan using DXA, also called DEXA, laboratory tests where appropriate, and medical assessment work together. It also provides guidance if you have already begun receiving care at another practice.
Joint health and osteoarthritis
A joint may become increasingly troublesome when getting up, climbing stairs or walking further. Whether osteoarthritis has already been diagnosed or the cause is still unclear, we want to know which activity is most affected and assess the findings in that context. This guides the choice of conservative treatment, meaning treatment without surgery.
Advice on movement, suitable aids and pain relief can each serve different purposes. Before adding an injection, its intended goal and the alternatives must be clear. Our joint health focus page explains this decision-making process. A non-surgical approach does not rule out surgical advice when it is needed; surgery cannot always be avoided or postponed.
Tendons and sports orthopaedics
Perhaps the symptoms begin during tennis, perhaps while carrying a shopping bag. In assessing tendon and muscle problems, the activity involved and how you respond to it both matter. Sports orthopaedic advice does not require you to be a competitive athlete or a particular age.
We discuss how things have developed, changes to your activity and the goal of any gradual increase in loading. The tendons and sports orthopaedics page explains how examination, adapted activity and additional treatments fit together. A recent injury needs a different assessment from activity-related pain that has been recurring for months.
Movement and aids for everyday life
A treatment plan needs to work at home. Our medical advice on movement and exercise therefore includes what you currently feel able to do, which movements are difficult and what support you need. If exercises are unclear or your symptoms change, that is important feedback for further planning.
An orthopaedic aid has a specific purpose: is it intended to support a particular movement or make an activity easier? The orthoses and aids page explains why fit, use and follow-up matter. Movement advice and the provision of aids connect several treatment areas; they are not a fixed combination for every patient.
How to find the right information on our website
Depending on what you already know about your symptoms, you can start in different places. If you only know where it hurts, begin with ‘Symptoms’. If a diagnosis has been established, you will find information under the relevant condition or focus area. If a particular treatment has been recommended, ‘Diagnostics & treatments’ explains the method, its benefits, limitations and alternatives. We first discuss a recommendation from another practice with you in a medical consultation.
You will find the relevant contacts in the individual care areas and our doctor profiles. Not every doctor performs every procedure. Dipl. med. Matthias Dallmann does not hold his own German statutory health insurance practice licence. You can arrange appointments during his locum work through our online booking system or directly with the practice.
Please bring existing reports, the corresponding images or access details and your current medication plan to your booked consultation. If the medication plan has a printed code, it helps us enter the information. Your current plan or a medication list is also useful without a code. You are welcome to note which previous treatment helped and what you would like to manage better again. You do not need to arrange new imaging just for the appointment.
Take time to decide about treatment
First, we discuss the treatment goal, potential benefits and alternatives. If you have German statutory health insurance (GKV) and wish to pay yourself for a service it does not cover, you receive a cost estimate beforehand. We agree the scope of the service and expected costs with you. This self-pay service is only provided after you have confirmed in writing that you wish to have the treatment and will cover the costs.
During your consultation, we discuss which treatments may be suitable. You can also take time after the appointment to decide for or against them. For follow-up treatment already recommended by OrthoCoast, use the agreed follow-up route. Another consultation is not required solely to arrange the appointment; please tell us beforehand if your symptoms or medical circumstances have changed.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if several areas of treatment apply to me?
When making your enquiry, mention your main limitation and any other symptoms. We work with you to identify which question should be addressed first. This does not mean we can promise to resolve every concern in one appointment.
Can I book a visit about my bone health even if I have no pain?
Yes. Increased risk can be the deciding factor for a bone health investigation, even when there is no pain. In our specialist bone assessment, we bring together your individual risks and existing findings. This forms the basis for assessing whether treatment would be useful for you and, if so, which treatment.
Does a service being listed on the website mean the treatment is suitable for me?
No. The fact that a service is available is not a personal recommendation. The medical question, your circumstances and how it compares with other options are what matter.
Is all treatment self-funded?
No. Costs are clarified for the specific service and your situation. No self-pay agreement is required for services billed exclusively to German statutory health insurance (GKV).
